The long-awaited Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extension from Velachery to St Thomas Mount in Chennai has moved a step closer to commissioning, with statutory inspection and speed trials conducted on Thursday. Passenger services on the 5‑km elevated stretch are expected to commence from March 10.
The inspection was carried out by Janak Kumar Garg, Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), who began the exercise with a motor trolley inspection covering the corridor from St Thomas Mount to Velachery. Officials examined track alignment, infrastructure, ballast profile, gradients, and riding quality, in addition to reviewing bridges, viaducts, traction systems, signalling, and interlocking arrangements to ensure compliance with safety standards.
This was followed by speed trials on both up and down lines using a nine-car AC EMU rake. The tests evaluated oscillation characteristics, braking performance, track geometry, and signal visibility under operational conditions.
The inspection also covered the new intermediate stations at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam, including passenger circulation and accessibility features. At St Thomas Mount, officials checked interchange arrangements connecting MRTS, suburban rail, and the metro network, enhancing multimodal connectivity.
Despite civil works being completed several years ago, this segment of the MRTS network had experienced long delays. The new extension now enables trains to run directly from Chennai Beach to St Thomas Mount, instead of terminating at Velachery, adding two intermediate stations and improving overall connectivity in south Chennai.
Once operational, the stretch is expected to strengthen St Thomas Mount as a key interchange hub and significantly enhance rail access for commuters traveling across southern and central parts of the city.
