Senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik on Sunday expressed confidence that the alliance between the Indian National Congress and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would secure a decisive victory in the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to reporters at Satyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai after a two-day review meeting on poll preparedness in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Wasnik described the alliance as a ā€œformidableā€ one and said it had taken final shape ahead of the elections.
He said the Congress-DMK alliance was confident of gaining strong support from the people and forming the government in the state after the votes are counted.
Wasnik added that discussions with party leaders and workers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry showed strong enthusiasm within the organisation. According to him, the party machinery in both regions is fully prepared for the elections.
Responding to questions about actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Wasnik dismissed concerns about its electoral impact and said the people’s mandate would remain with the DMK-Congress alliance.
Meanwhile, Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar said the party would contest 28 out of the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu but would work across the state to ensure victory for the alliance.
He said the party plans to deploy around 1,000 active members in each constituency to strengthen campaign efforts for both Congress candidates and its allies. Chodankar also noted that the party currently has around 22,000 village committees and nearly two lakh active members, along with strong booth-level committees.
During the meeting, Chodankar briefly fainted and was taken to a nearby hospital. Later, the Tamil Nadu Congress leadership clarified that he had slipped after twisting his ankle and suffered a minor sprain. He later resumed official work.
