The Central government has approved granting international status to Madurai Airport, a long-standing demand of people in southern Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken at a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Narendra Modi.

Welcoming the announcement, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the move would greatly benefit the people of Madurai and neighbouring districts. He thanked the Prime Minister and the Union government for accepting the long-pending request of the region.

With international status, foreign airlines will be able to operate direct services to Madurai, making it easier for foreign tourists and pilgrims to travel to the historic temple city. The move is also expected to increase international air traffic and improve connectivity for southern Tamil Nadu.

Palaniswami said the upgrade would boost tourism, trade and economic growth in the southern districts of the state. The announcement comes ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Tamil Nadu.

The decision is expected to strengthen Madurai’s position as a key aviation hub in the region and open new opportunities for international travel and business.
