The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to set up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several major neighbourhoods of the city, including Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar, as part of efforts to strengthen Chennai’s EV charging infrastructure.
According to officials, each location will have two charging points, enabling motorists to charge their vehicles while making use of nearby parking facilities.
The initiative aims to support the growing number of electric vehicle users in Chennai, including private vehicle owners as well as those working in app-based taxi services, logistics and delivery operations.
The proposal was earlier raised by Ward 104 councillor T. V. Shemmozhi, who highlighted the challenges faced by EV users in finding convenient charging facilities across the city.
Following the suggestion, Chennai Mayor R. Priya announced that EV charging stations would be set up at more than 15 locations in the city.
Officials said the charging facilities will be developed along with parking spaces under a revamped Smart Parking Management System, which will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of the year, as part of Chennai’s broader push to **promote cleaner transportation and reduce vehicular pollution
