Noted Tamil writer and literary critic S. Tamilselvan has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for 2025 in the literary criticism category.
He has been honoured for his work “Tamizh Sirukathaiyin Thadangal” (Traces of the Tamil Short Story), a critical study that examines the evolution and trends of Tamil short stories over several decades. The book analyses not only literary styles but also the social, political and cultural influences reflected in the genre.
The award-winning work is noted for presenting a working-class perspective while tracing the development of Tamil short stories and engaging with contemporary writers and literary movements.
Tamilselvan, who has been associated with progressive literary circles and has served in roles linked to left-oriented cultural organisations, has also contributed to several literary journals over the years.
Prestigious Literary Recognition
The Sahitya Akademi Award is among India’s highest literary honours, presented annually to outstanding works in 24 Indian languages across categories such as poetry, fiction, and literary criticism.
The announcement of the 2025 awards comes after a delay, with the official list being released recently, bringing recognition to several authors across languages.
Tamilselvan’s achievement has been widely welcomed in literary circles, with many hailing the award as a recognition of his significant contribution to Tamil literary criticism and scholarship.
