Following the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the 2026 Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a massive crackdown on the movement of unaccounted cash and valuables. As of this week, enforcement agencies have seized a total of ₹42.65 crore across various districts in Tamil Nadu. The seizures include liquid cash, gold ornaments, liquor, and freebies like electronic goods that were allegedly intended for voter inducement. The Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, Archana Patnaik, stated that over 4,200 flying squads and static surveillance teams have been deployed to monitor highways and sensitive areas. The highest amounts of seizures have been reported from districts like Vellore, Tiruppur, and Chennai, where vehicle checks have been intensified. The ECI has also started monitoring high-volume digital transactions via UPI and bank transfers to ensure that the “money power” does not influence the democratic process. This rigorous enforcement has caused some concern among small traders and the general public, leading the Commission to issue a clarification. Officials have been instructed to exercise “common sense” and not harass genuine citizens carrying reasonable amounts for personal or business use, provided they have basic documentation. As the polling date of April 23 approaches, the ECI expects the seizure figures to rise, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the current electoral environment.
