Mumbai, Mar 21: Mumbai City FC secured a crucial 1–0 win over defending champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant to move to the top of the Indian Super League 2025-26 table.
The match was decided by a first-half goal from Noufal P.N., whose calm finish proved enough to separate the two sides in a tightly contested game. With this win, Mumbai climbed to 14 points from six matches, while Mohun Bagan dropped to second place with 13 points.
Mumbai started cautiously but gradually grew into the match with quick counter-attacks. Their first real chance came in the 21st minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte was put through on goal, but Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made an important save to keep the scores level.
The breakthrough came five minutes later. A well-worked move involving Pereyra Díaz and Joni Kauko opened up space on the left, and the ball was eventually played to Noufal, who calmly slotted it past Kaith to give Mumbai the lead.
Mohun Bagan responded before halftime and nearly equalised in the 39th minute. Dimitri Petratos delivered a dangerous cross that Jason Cummings headed towards goal, but Mumbai goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa made a strong save to deny him.
In the second half, Mohun Bagan dominated possession and pushed hard for an equaliser. The home side earned multiple corners and free-kicks but struggled to break through Mumbai’s solid defensive setup.
The Mariners thought they had found the equaliser in the 63rd minute when Petratos scored from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was a major setback for the home side, which continued to press forward but lacked the finishing touch.
Mumbai, on the other hand, focused on defending their lead. They maintained a compact shape and committed extra players at the back whenever needed. Despite losing key striker Pereyra Díaz to injury in the second half, they held firm under pressure.
Mohun Bagan created several late chances, but Mumbai’s defence stayed organised and disciplined until the final whistle.
The win highlights Mumbai City’s strong start to the season and their ability to grind out results, while Mohun Bagan will need to address their finishing issues after failing to convert multiple opportunities.
