Chennai, March 24:
The Election Commission of India has clarified that minor spelling or printing errors in voter identity cards will not prevent citizens from casting their votes, provided their identity can be verified at the polling booth.
In a statement, the commission emphasized that voters are required to establish their identity, typically using the Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC). However, discrepancies such as minor mistakes in name or other details on the card will not lead to rejection if the individual’s identity matches official records.
Officials noted that in the absence of the voter ID card, individuals can present any one of 12 approved alternative identification documents, including Aadhaar, to prove their identity and exercise their franchise.
The Commission underlined that the most crucial requirement is the presence of the voter’s name in the electoral roll of the concerned polling booth. Even if a voter possesses an ID issued in another constituency, they will be allowed to vote only if their name appears in the current booth’s voter list.
In cases where there is a mismatch in the photograph on the voter ID, polling officials may ask the voter to produce an additional valid photo identification from the approved list to confirm their identity.
The clarification comes as part of efforts to ensure maximum voter participation and to avoid confusion among the electorate ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
