Chennai, Mar 26:

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections around the corner on April 23, Chennai is bracing for rising summer temperatures. The Met Office has predicted a 2–3°C increase in afternoon temperatures over the next few weeks, coinciding with a peak in political activity as party cadres hit the streets for rallies, door-to-door campaigning, and meetings.

Party workers are already visible across neighbourhoods, distributing flyers, attending public gatherings, and engaging voters directly.

Speaking from Mylapore, a senior DMK cadre said, “Campaigning under the sun is tough, but we are committed to reaching every voter. Staying hydrated and alert is our top priority while working on the field.”

Health experts and political organizers emphasize the importance of hydration and energy management during this period. “Cadres should carry water bottles at all times, include electrolyte drinks, and take short breaks in shaded areas. Lightweight, breathable clothing and hats can help prevent heat exhaustion,” said Dr. R. Suresh, a public health specialist in Chennai.

AIADMK field volunteers echoed similar concerns. “We start early in the morning before the sun gets too harsh and take regular water breaks. Fruit juices, tender coconut water, and light snacks help keep energy levels up for long rallies,” said an EPS campaign worker in T. Nagar.

With temperatures climbing, political parties are increasingly setting up mobile water stations and cooling areas at busy campaign spots. Local authorities are also advising citizens and campaign teams to remain vigilant against heatstroke and sunburn during prolonged outdoor activity.

As Chennai heats up, the coming weeks are expected to be a test of both endurance and electoral enthusiasm, with hydration and energy management becoming as crucial as voter outreach in this high-intensity election season.
