Chennai, Apr 1:
The Greater Chennai Corporation is likely to fall short of its ₹2,750 crore tax collection target for the current financial year, raising concerns over civic revenue and funding for infrastructure projects.
Officials said that although collections have shown steady progress, the overall figures may not reach the target before the financial year ends. This comes after the Corporation had achieved a record ₹2,750 crore collection in the previous financial year.
A key reason for the shortfall is the accumulation of pending property tax dues across multiple zones. Authorities also pointed to slower compliance rates, with many taxpayers delaying payments until the last minute despite the availability of digital payment options.
As per recent data, the Corporation had collected over ₹1,800 crore by mid-March, leaving a significant gap to meet the target. In response, officials have stepped up efforts by issuing reminders to defaulters and tightening enforcement measures to improve collection efficiency.
