Chennai, Apr 1:
Rising temperatures across Tamil Nadu have led to a noticeable surge in seasonal viral infections, with chickenpox cases crossing 1,300 in the first three months of 2026.
Health department data shows that 1,320 chickenpox cases were reported between January and March this year. Chennai recorded the highest number at 476 cases, followed by Madurai with 96 cases and Tirupattur with 50 cases.
During the same period last year, around 1,000 cases were reported, indicating a significant year-on-year increase.
Officials said that while infections such as measles, chickenpox, and mumps are typically seen during peak summer months, the early onset of heat this year—starting as early as February—has accelerated their spread.
Hospitals across the state, both government and private, are witnessing a steady rise in patient visits linked to these viral infections. Health authorities have cautioned that cases may continue to climb in the coming weeks as temperatures rise further.
