Chennai, Apr 2:

As temperatures soar across Chennai, the onset of peak summer has begun to take a visible toll on skin health, particularly among men who spend long hours outdoors.

With rising heat, humidity, and exposure to harsh sunlight, dermatologists are urging men to adopt simple yet effective skincare measures to prevent damage.

“Men often ignore skincare until problems appear, but prevention is key during summer,” said Dr. R. Karthik, Consultant Dermatologist. “Prolonged sun exposure can lead to tanning, sunburn, premature ageing, and even long-term skin damage.”

One of the most important steps, experts say, is the regular use of sunscreen. “A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied 20 minutes before stepping out and reapplied every few hours,” explained Dr. Meena Subramanian, Skin Specialist. She added that sunscreen is not just for women and should be part of every man’s daily routine.

Hydration also plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. “The body loses a lot of fluids through sweat during summer. Drinking enough water helps keep the skin hydrated and prevents dryness and irritation,” noted Dr. Karthik.

Cleansing the face regularly is another key recommendation. Sweat and pollution can clog pores, leading to acne and dullness. “Men should wash their face at least twice a day using a gentle cleanser suited to their skin type,” said Dr. Meena.

Clothing choices can also make a difference. Experts advise wearing light-coloured, loose cotton clothes to reduce heat absorption and allow the skin to breathe. “Avoid synthetic fabrics as they can trap sweat and cause skin rashes,” she added.

Diet is equally important in protecting the skin from within. “Fruits rich in water content such as watermelon and cucumber help cool the body and improve skin health,” said Dr. Karthik, recommending a balanced diet with fresh produce.

Finally, experts stress the importance of limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. “If stepping out between 11 am and 3 pm is unavoidable, protective measures like caps, sunglasses, and scarves can reduce direct sun exposure,” Dr. Meena advised.

With summer intensifying in Chennai, dermatologists emphasise that consistent care and small lifestyle changes can go a long way in protecting skin health, helping men stay comfortable and confident despite the heat.
