India has marked a major milestone in its nuclear energy journey, with the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam attaining criticality, effectively signalling the transition into the second stage of the country’s three-stage nuclear programme.
The achievement indicates the start of a controlled and sustained nuclear chain reaction, a crucial step before the reactor begins full-scale power generation. The 500 MW PFBR, developed indigenously, is a key component of India’s long-term strategy to achieve energy security and self-reliance.
Fast breeder reactors like the PFBR are designed to produce more nuclear fuel than they consume by using plutonium and uranium-238. This makes them significantly more efficient and positions India among a select group of nations with advanced breeder reactor technology.
The Kalpakkam project plays a pivotal role in India’s three-stage nuclear plan, acting as a bridge to the third stage, which will utilise the country’s vast thorium reserves for power generation.
Officials said the milestone strengthens India’s clean energy ambitions while reducing dependence on imported fuels. It is also expected to boost the country’s nuclear power capacity in the coming years.
The development has been hailed as a significant scientific and technological achievement, underlining India’s growing capabilities in advanced nuclear energy systems and its push towards sustainable power generation.
