Chennai, Apr 13:

As summer tightens its grip over Chennai, health experts have advised residents to prioritise hydration to cope with rising temperatures and prevent heat-related illnesses.

“By the time a person feels thirsty, the body is already mildly dehydrated,” doctors caution, urging people to drink water at regular intervals rather than waiting for thirst signals.

They recommend starting the day with a glass of water. “Hydration should begin early in the morning to compensate for fluid loss overnight,” a physician said.

Experts also stress the importance of consuming water-rich foods. “Fruits such as watermelon and vegetables like cucumber contribute significantly to maintaining fluid balance,” they noted.

At the same time, beverages such as tea, coffee and sugary drinks should be consumed in moderation. “What may feel refreshing momentarily can worsen dehydration,” health professionals warned.

Carrying a water bottle while stepping out has been suggested as a simple but effective habit.

“Accessibility ensures consistent intake,” an expert explained.
Given the high humidity and sweating, replenishing electrolytes is equally important. “Drinks like buttermilk or lemon water with a pinch of salt help restore essential minerals lost through sweat,” doctors said.

Residents have also been advised to avoid outdoor activity during peak hours. “Exposure between late morning and mid-afternoon can increase the risk of heat exhaustion,” officials cautioned.

Loose, light-coloured cotton clothing is recommended to minimise heat absorption. “Appropriate clothing allows the body to regulate temperature more efficiently,” experts added.

With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming weeks, authorities emphasise that simple precautions and adequate hydration can go a long way in ensuring public health during the summer months.
