Chennai, Apr 14:

Two months after a single judge of the Madras High Court dismissed his plea, TVK founder and actor Vijay has filed an appeal challenging the ₹1.5 crore penalty imposed by the Income Tax Department.
The penalty relates to the assessment year 2015–16, with the department alleging that the actor failed to disclose his full income.
Earlier, dismissing his writ petition on February 6, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy had held that the penalty order was issued within the limitation period prescribed under Section 275(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act.
The case stems from searches conducted at Vijay’s residence on September 30, 2015. According to the department, undisclosed income of about ₹15 crore was detected during the operation. While Vijay had declared an income of ₹35.42 crore for the financial year, officials claimed that he had not reported earnings linked to the 2015 film Puli.
Following this, a reassessment order was issued on December 30, 2017. The department also rejected Vijay’s claim of ₹2.92 crore as expenditure under “release and fan club expenses,” adding the amount back to his taxable income.
