Washington, Apr 18:
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington and Tehran are “very close” to a peace deal and claimed Iran has agreed to hand over its enriched uranium, a key sticking point in negotiations.
He warned that the US could resume airstrikes and impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports if Tehran refuses to accept an agreement to end the conflict that began on February 28. Iran has not confirmed any such deal.
Trump said there was a “very good chance” of reaching an agreement, referring to the material as “nuclear dust” and insisting Iran must be permanently blocked from developing nuclear weapons. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also warned that Iran could face a blockade and strikes on infrastructure, power, and energy facilities if it “chooses poorly.”
Diplomatic efforts continued alongside military tensions.
A 10-day ceasefire came into effect between Israel and Lebanon, with Trump suggesting leaders from both countries could meet at the White House within days.
Israel reported strikes on Hezbollah rocket launchers just before the truce began, while Hezbollah has not formally confirmed acceptance but said it would respect the ceasefire if attacks stop.
