Chennai, Apr 24: Chennai is set to enhance commuter comfort with the introduction of its second air-conditioned (AC) electric train service in the suburban rail network. The upcoming service is likely to operate on the Chennai Central–Arakkonam route, addressing growing passenger demand, particularly during peak hours.

The new AC train, manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory, is designed with a capacity to carry 4,914 passengers, including 1,116 seated and 3,798 standing. Currently stationed at the Annanur Railway yard, the rake is undergoing testing before being pressed into service. The addition comes in response to the encouraging reception of the city’s first AC suburban train.

The inaugural AC EMU service, launched in April 2025 on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu corridor, marked a major milestone in South India’s suburban rail system. Operated with six daily services (except Sundays), it quickly gained popularity among commuters for offering improved travel comfort. With the second AC train set to join the network, authorities aim to further strengthen Chennai’s suburban transport system, widely regarded as the lifeline of the city and its surrounding regions.
