Chennai, Apr 25:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, following a deadly explosion at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in the district.
According to police reports, at least 23 people were charred to death and several others sustained grievous injuries in the blast that occurred on April 19 near Virudhunagar. The incident took place at a unit in the Kattanarpatti area, where over 100 workers, including women, were reportedly present at the time.
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC observed that the incident raises serious concerns of human rights violations. .
The rights body has directed the Tamil Nadu chief secretary and district police authorities to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the health status of the injured, progress of the investigation, and details of compensation provided to the victims’ families.
