Chennai, Apr 25:

The South Indian Film Editor’s Association (SIFEA) has temporarily suspended editor Pradeep E Ragav for allegedly violating the association’s bylaws and failing to prevent the online leak of the Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay.

The decision was taken following an emergency meeting convened on April 17, after the film was leaked online around April 9. The much-anticipated project, featuring the actor-turned-politician, had originally been slated for a Pongal release but faced delays due to censor-related issues. The leak also coincided with Vijay’s Assembly election campaign for his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

According to officials, the Chennai Cyber Crime Police, which is investigating the case, has arrested a freelance editor who had worked on the film for allegedly stealing and distributing the content.

In a statement, SIFEA clarified that Pradeep’s suspension was primarily due to the hiring of non-member editors, which is a violation of the association’s established protocols. While noting that he was not directly responsible for the leak, the association held him accountable as the incident occurred under his supervision. It also stated that it would not support his professional engagements during the suspension period and urged other film bodies to back its action.

Responding to questions on the use of freelance editors, SIFEA president V Gopikrishna emphasized the importance of adhering to union norms. “Protocols are established to preserve the sanctity of a film. In this day and age, when access to technology creates editors every day, these safeguards are essential to maintain trust,” he said.

The episode has once again brought into focus concerns over digital security in the film industry, especially amid increasing instances of leaks affecting high-profile releases.
