Chennai, April 29:
With summer intensifying across Chennai, residents are turning to practical and breathable clothing choices to cope with soaring temperatures and humidity levels.
As the mercury rises, experts say dressing right can significantly reduce heat stress and improve comfort during the day.
Lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen are being widely recommended, as they allow better air circulation and absorb sweat effectively. Loose-fitting clothes in light colours help reflect sunlight and keep the body cooler compared to dark or tight garments that trap heat.
“Chennai’s heat is not just about temperature, but also high humidity. Wearing airy, natural fabrics makes a big difference in staying comfortable,” said a city-based textileHealth professionals also advise choosing full-sleeved, loose clothing to protect the skin from direct sun exposure while still allowing ventilation. Accessories such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and umbrellas are increasingly becoming essentials for those stepping out during peak hours.
“People often think less clothing means more comfort, but covering up with the right fabric actually prevents dehydration and sunburn,” noted a dermatologist from a leading city hospital.
Footwear, too, plays a role in managing heat. Open, breathable sandals are preferred over closed shoes to avoid excessive sweating and discomfort. At the same time, experts caution against synthetic materials that can irritate the skin during prolonged exposure to heat.
With daytime temperatures climbing and heatwaves becoming more frequent, residents are also being advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon. Simple clothing choices, combined with precautionary measures, can go a long way in helping Chennaiites navigate the harsh summer conditions.
“Comfort, protection and hydration should go hand in hand during this season,” a public health expert added, urging citizens to prioritise safety while adapting to the changing climate.
