Chennai, April 29:

The Southern Railway’s Chennai Division has recorded a freight revenue of ₹1,289.78 crore for the financial year 2025–26, reflecting strong growth in cargo operations and logistics expansion.

Expansion of Freight Services
During the year, the division diversified its freight portfolio by introducing new cargo segments.
This included the movement of steel pipes from Chennai Harbour to Ponmalai, improving industrial connectivity. It also entered the electric vehicle logistics segment, transporting consignments from Tada and Jolarpettai to destinations in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone.

The division strengthened container traffic by launching services for the Central Warehousing Corporation, moving cargo from Korukkupet to Noli in Delhi Division. In addition, Truck-on-Train (ToT) services were successfully operated, with 430 trucks transported from Singaperumalkoil to Farukhnagar, highlighting efficient multimodal logistics capabilities.

In a significant development, limestone transportation from Kamarajar Port resumed after a gap of 14 months. Consignments were sent to major industrial hubs such as Toranagallu and Mecheri Road, marking the revival of an important cargo stream.

To meet rising demand, the division commissioned its second Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Anuppampattu near Ponneri. The facility handled its first rake of 45 wagons, covering a distance of 1,389 km to a private freight terminal under the South Eastern Railway zone.

Officials said the division’s performance underscores its growing role in strengthening freight movement and improving supply chain efficiency, contributing to regional economic growth.
