In the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the BJP-led NDA has taken a commanding early lead, with trends suggesting the alliance is ahead in over 43 seats as counting progresses.

The saffron party, seeking a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is showing strong performance across both Upper and Lower Assam.

The Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha is currently trailing, with leads in approximately 10 to 15 seats, including early advantages in Pakabetbari and Mangaldai.

A high-profile battle is unfolding in Jorhat, where the BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami is currently leading over the Congress’s chief ministerial face, Gaurav Gogoi.

Regional players like the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) are also marking their presence, contributing to the NDA’s early momentum in several key constituencies.

Counting is being conducted across 40 centers in 35 districts, following a record voter turnout of 85.96%, the highest in the state’s history.

With 64 seats required for a simple majority in the 126-member House, the NDA appears to be in a strong position, though the opposition remains hopeful as EVM rounds move into more competitive rural belts.

Security has been intensified across the state, particularly in sensitive zones, as the ECI expects more definitive results to emerge by late afternoon.
