Chennai, May 7:

The proposed Chennai Metro Rail corridor connecting Chennai International Airport and Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus has received approval from the Union Cabinet, according to Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The project is expected to be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹9,000 crore.
CMRL Project Director T. Archunan said the proposed corridor would significantly improve public transport connectivity between the airport and the newly developed Kilambakkam bus terminus, which has emerged as a major transport hub in southern Chennai.
The metro corridor will span around 15 kilometres and include 12 stations between Chennai Airport and Kilambakkam. Officials said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project was submitted to the Central Government in February this year, following which the Union Government prioritised the proposal for approval.
According to officials, the new metro line is expected to reduce traffic congestion and provide faster travel for passengers commuting to and from the Kilambakkam Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus. The project is also expected to benefit airport passengers, long-distance bus travellers and residents in Chennai’s rapidly expanding southern suburbs.
As part of the preparatory process, Chennai Metro Rail officials are holding consultations with authorities from the airport, National Highways Department, Water Supply Board and other infrastructure agencies to finalise the alignment, station locations and technical requirements for the corridor.
CMRL officials further stated that land survey and demarcation work required for the project has already been completed. Following formal clearance from the Centre, the next phase of implementation and construction activity is expected to commence.
