Kanimozhi seeks separate seating in Lok Sabha

Chennai, May 9:

In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has taken a formal step towards distancing itself from the INDIA bloc, with party MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi writing to Om Birla seeking a separate seating arrangement for DMK members in the Lok Sabha.
In her letter dated May 7, 2026, Kanimozhi cited “changed political circumstances” and stated that the DMK’s alliance with the Indian National Congress had come to an end. She requested that DMK MPs be allotted separate seating, instead of continuing alongside Congress members in the House.
The letter, bearing her signature, quickly went viral on social media, fuelling speculation over a major political realignment at the national level. The move is being seen as a clear indication that the DMK is formally disengaging from the opposition alliance it once played a key role in shaping.
This development is expected to weaken opposition unity, particularly at a time when the INDIA bloc has already been facing internal strains and electoral setbacks following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe the split could have wider implications for opposition coordination in Parliament.
Amid the evolving situation, Akhilesh Yadav appeared to signal support for the DMK. In a post on X, accompanied by photographs with M. K. Stalin and Mamata Banerjee, he expressed unity among allies during challenging times, hinting at possible new alignments.
As political equations continue to shift both in Tamil Nadu and at the national level, the DMK’s move marks a crucial turning point, with its impact likely to be felt in Parliament and beyond.
