Chennai, May 21:
The newly appointed Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner Dr. G.S. Sameeran has outlined a series of priorities aimed at improving safety and civic infrastructure in the city, with a strong focus on pedestrian protection and flood mitigation.
According to official reports, Sameeran will prioritise enhancing road safety for pedestrians, strengthening disaster preparedness, and addressing civic concerns such as the stray dog menace. These measures are part of a broader effort to make Chennai a safer and more resilient urban centre.
A 2012-batch IAS officer, Sameeran brings extensive administrative experience, having previously served as district collector in Coimbatore and Tenkasi, and held key positions in urban development agencies. His background in infrastructure and civic management is expected to play a crucial role in tackling Chennaiâs long-standing urban challenges.
He succeeds J. Kumaragurubaran, who served as GCC Commissioner for nearly two years. Soon after assuming office, Sameeran met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat, signalling the governmentâs emphasis on urban governance and administrative efficiency.
Officials indicated that the new commissionerâs approach will focus on integrated planning, combining safety measures, environmental management, and infrastructure upgrades to improve overall quality of life for Chennai residents.
