Chennai, May 22:

In yet another major political development, the Tamil Nadu government has carried out a fresh Cabinet expansion, further consolidating the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition. The latest reshuffle saw MLAs from alliance partners VCK and IUML inducted as ministers, marking a continued broadening of the government’s power base.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to the newly appointed ministers in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The expansion reflects the coalition’s strategy of accommodating key alliance partners while strengthening administrative representation across social and minority welfare portfolios.

In a significant first, the government also created a dedicated Social Justice portfolio, with Vanni Arasu, MLA from Tindivanam, becoming Tamil Nadu’s inaugural Minister for Social Justice. He has also been entrusted with the Adi Dravidar Welfare and Hill Tribes department, signalling a focused push on social equity and welfare administration.

Another MLA, A M Shahjahan of Papanasam, representing the IUML, was inducted as Minister for Minorities Welfare and given charge of the Minorities Welfare and Wakf Board portfolio. Officials said the allocation aims to ensure targeted governance for marginalised communities and strengthen coalition representation in policy-making.

Minutes after the swearing-in ceremony, the government formally announced portfolio allocations through an official release. The move underscores the coalition’s intent to maintain political balance while expanding governance responsibilities among alliance partners.

Political observers say the expansion highlights the growing consolidation of the TVK-led alliance, which continues to integrate key partners such as VCK and IUML into the state Cabinet.

With more MLAs from alliance parties taking ministerial roles, the government appears to be reinforcing both stability and inclusivity in its administrative structure ahead of the next phase of governance.

The TVK government has now become a full-fledged coalition government, with Congress, VCK and IUML as its post-poll allies, while the four members of the CPI and CPM continue to extend unconditional outside support to the government.
