Chennai, May 26:

The second phase of expansion at Chennai International Airport has been delayed, with the new terminal now expected to become operational only by early 2027.

The Airports Authority of India is executing the Phase-2 works at an estimated cost of ₹1,207 crore as part of a broader modernisation plan aimed at upgrading infrastructure and enhancing passenger experience.

The expansion comes in response to rising air traffic, with the airport handling over 3 crore passengers in 2025. Once completed, the project is expected to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to more than 3.5 crore.

The upcoming terminal will feature modern infrastructure, including additional check-in counters, more aerobridges, advanced baggage scanners and upgraded luggage handling systems. These improvements are intended to streamline passenger movement and reduce congestion at one of India’s busiest airports.

Officials said the delay is linked to ongoing construction and integration works, but the expanded facilities are expected to significantly boost operational efficiency once commissioned.
