While cricket has inspired numerous films in Indian cinema, badminton — one of India’s most popular and widely played sports — has rarely found representation on screen. Rematch aims to change that by becoming Tamil cinema’s first film to explore badminton as the backdrop for a youthful romantic sports drama.
Popular entertainer and philanthropist KPY Bala, winner of the hit television show Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru, plays the lead role in the film. Bala, who made his debut as a hero with Gandhi Kannadi in 2025, has since earned appreciation for both his performances and social initiatives.
After listening to several scripts for his next project, Bala chose Rematch due to his personal connection with badminton. A passionate player since his school days — where he secured third place in a state-level tournament — Bala connected instantly with the film’s emotional core and sports backdrop.
The film introduces Dhanu Harsha as the female lead in Tamil cinema. A theatre artiste and model known in Kannada films, Dhanu is also an accomplished badminton player, adding authenticity to her role.
The cast also includes Ilavarasu in a pivotal role and Santhosh Prathap in an important appearance, along with Sha Ra, Sashank, Chitra Lakshmanan, Cell Murugan, and several notable actors in key roles.
The technical crew comprises music composer Achu Rajamani, cinematographer Arvi, editor N. B. Srikanth, art director Pa. Mahendran, and costume designer Anusha.
Rematch is written and directed by debutant R. Vimal Kumar, an award-winning student of the Screenplay Writing and Direction department at BOFTA Film Institute and a former associate of filmmaker Radha Mohan on films such as Kaatrin Mozhi and Bommai. Publicity is handled by Nikil Murukan.
The film is produced by Zinema Media and Entertainment Ltd’s Dinesh Raj along with Prakash Seshadhri and G. Ravi Kumar. Creative Entertainers & Distributors’ G. Dhananjheyan is overseeing the film’s creative and line production.
The shooting commenced with a grand pooja ceremony attended by several prominent personalities from the Tamil film industry, including Kalaipuli S. Thanu, actress Meena, Arulpathi, directors Sasi, Radha Mohan, R. Kannan, Mahesh Rajendran, actor Kathir, Saregama Anand, Cook With Comali Joshua, and KPY Thomson, along with the entire cast and crew.
Planned as a start-to-finish schedule, the production is expected to be completed by October 2026. Blending sports, romance, emotions, and contemporary relationships, Rematch promises to deliver a fresh cinematic experience while bringing the spirit and excitement of badminton to the big screen.
