Chennai, May 30:
A wordy duel during a marraige function turned into enmity, as a masked gang went on a hacking spree, damaging all the vehicles that came their way and inflicted severe cut wounds on six people at Nettur village near Alangulam in the southern Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu on Friday evening.
The gang, numbering about nine, which was said to have come in two-wheelers, did not spare anyone who came their way–whether it is passersby or innocent public in shops, besides parked cars and two-wheelers–as they unleashed terror, spreading panic among the villagers, according to reports received.
Six people suffered cut injuries, few cars and two-wheelers were damaged, as the gang members gave vent to the ire to the dispute that rose during a wedding event in the area on Thursday.
Police acting on information rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital.
Special teams were formed to nab the culprits, and heavy police pickets were posted in the village to avoid any backlash.
The attack comes close on the heels of a similar incident that took place at adjoining Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district in March, in which two including a migrant worker having  tea in a roadside shop, were hacked to death and six others injured in the indiscriminate attack by a nine-member armed gang, which were under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place at Perumpaththu village near Nanguneri leading to protests by the locals as there was delay in arresting the culprits.
Following a massive road roko by locals demanding justice, heavy police forces were deployed and the [olice subsequently arrested seven suspects in connection with the rampage.
