Chennai, June 2:
A tragic accident in Nandambakkam claimed the life of a migrant worker and left 48 others injured after an iron handrail on a staircase collapsed while they were watching the IPL final on Sunday night.
According to police, more than 100 workers had gathered on a staircase ramp at a temporary accommodation facility to watch the final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. As excitement peaked, many leaned against the iron railing, which gave way under the excessive weight.
Over 40 workers fell from a height of nearly 15 feet, landing on top of each other. Local residents and fellow workers rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts before alerting authorities.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Brinji Manjhi from Jharkhand, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he later succumbed despite treatment.
Emergency teams, including police and fire service personnel, shifted 26 injured workers to Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital and 22 others to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre.
Officials said all the injured are currently stable and out of danger. Investigations are underway to determine lapses in safety and overcrowding at the site.
