Dhaka, June 3:
A report by the Dhaka-based Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation has revealed a rise in mob violence and human rights violations across Bangladesh in May.
According to the report, at least 32 people were killed and 71 critically injured in 69 separate incidents of mob violence, up from 21 deaths and 49 injuries recorded in April.
The organisation said the increase reflects a growing tendency among people to take the law into their own hands.
Most deaths were linked to allegations of theft, robbery, rape, sexual assault and personal disputes.
At least 35 injured victims were later handed over to police, while some attacks also targeted law enforcement personnel.
The report also expressed concern over the recovery of 53 unidentified bodies from rivers, roadsides, railway tracks and fields across the country.
It warned that the trend raises questions about unresolved crimes, weaknesses in criminal investigations and possible extrajudicial killings.
Violence against women and children also worsened, with 326 incidents recorded in May.
Reported rape cases rose to 70, including 16 gang rapes and six cases of rape followed by murder.
Additionally, 34 incidents of violence against journalists were documented, alongside rising legal harassment, highlighting growing concerns over freedom of expression and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
