Chennai, June 4:
Schools across Tamil Nadu reopened on Thursday for classes 1 to 12, marking the start of the 2026–27 academic year after a brief delay caused by intense summer heat. The reopening was initially scheduled for June 1 but was postponed due to soaring temperatures across the State.
In preparation for the reopening, the Directorate of School Education conducted a statewide orientation programme for elementary school teachers from June 1 to 3. The initiative focused particularly on teachers handling classes 1 to 3, as these grades will follow a revised curriculum this year. Updated term-one textbooks for these classes are ready and will be distributed to students.
The curriculum revision follows the rollout of the State Education Policy (SEP) announced in August 2025. Work is currently underway to update the syllabus for classes 4 to 12, with teachers from across Tamil Nadu engaged in the process in Chennai.
