Chennai,  June 8:

In a major push to strengthen Chennai’s public transport network, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is planning to introduce mini electric buses aimed at improving last-mile connectivity for metro rail commuters. The initiative is expected to bridge the gap between metro stations and nearby residential areas, narrow streets, and key local destinations where larger buses face operational challenges.

The proposed mini electric buses will have a seating capacity of 20 to 30 passengers and come equipped with modern features such as low-floor entry for easy access, wheelchair accessibility, CCTV surveillance, real-time passenger information systems, and mobile charging points. These features are designed to ensure a safe, inclusive, and comfortable commuting experience.

Apart from convenience, the move also aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader goal of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. By introducing electric buses, the government aims to reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions across the city.

Once implemented, the mini electric bus service is expected to significantly enhance connectivity to metro stations, making daily commuting smoother and more efficient for thousands of passengers in Chennai.
