Even as anticipation builds around actor-turned-Chief Minister Vijay’s much-awaited final film Jana Nayagan, fans have another reason to celebrate their star on the big screen. The blockbuster Mersal, directed by Atlee, is set for a theatrical re-release on June 19, marking the run-up to Vijay’s birthday on June 22.

While uncertainty continues to surround the release of Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, the re-release of Mersal is expected to rekindle fan fervour across select screens in Chennai and Chengalpattu. Originally released during Diwali in 2017, the film was both a commercial success and a fan favourite, further cementing Vijay’s mass appeal.

Mersal features Vijay in a triple role—as a father and his two sons—and revolves around Maaran, a compassionate doctor who charges minimal fees while secretly leading a double life as a vigilante magician targeting corruption in the medical sector. The narrative unfolds with his arrest, which brings his past and hidden motives to light.

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, and SJ Suryah, alongside Vadivelu, Sathyaraj, Kovai Sarala, and others. It marked Vijay’s second collaboration with Atlee after Theri, followed later by Bigil, forming a successful creative partnership.

Produced by Thenandal Studio Limited as its 100th venture, Mersal featured music by AR Rahman, cinematography by GK Vishnu, and editing by Ruben. Despite some criticism over its length and familiar storyline, the film received largely positive reviews and went on to gross nearly Rs 200 crore at the box office.

With its re-release timed around Vijay’s birthday celebrations, Mersal is expected to draw enthusiastic crowds, offering fans a nostalgic cinematic experience while they await clarity on what could be their icon’s final outing on screen.
