Chennai, June 22:
The Madras High Court has directed the governments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to submit a detailed report on the removal of stray dogs from public places such as educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, and railway stations.
The direction comes in the backdrop of a Supreme Court case concerning the safety of the public from stray dog attacks. The Supreme Court, in its recent observations, noted reports suggesting a rise in dog bite incidents and fatalities in certain states, and emphasized the need for stronger preventive and control measures.
It also instructed that High Courts across the country should take suo motu cognizance and monitor the implementation of its orders.
Following this, the Madras High Court registered a suo motu case, which came up for hearing before a bench led by the Chief Justice. During the hearing, the court ordered both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments to file their reports within four weeks.
The judges further advised that priority should be given to removing stray dogs from sensitive locations such as educational institutions. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
