Chennai, June 23:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday asserted that his elevation to the top post was the result of sustained public service and people’s trust, rejecting criticism that his political success was sudden or superficial.

Replying to the debate on the Governor’s address on the final day of the Assembly session, Vijay addressed remarks from opposition parties regarding his transition from cinema to politics. He said attempts were being made to portray his journey as an overnight rise, similar to a film storyline.

“Not a Reel Story”

Dismissing such claims, Vijay stated that his political journey was grounded in reality and long-term engagement with the public. He said he did not walk straight from the film industry into the Chief Minister’s office, but earned his position through years of work and the confidence reposed in him by the people of Tamil Nadu.

He also expressed gratitude to the Leader of the Opposition and other members who participated in the discussion, while taking a subtle dig at opposition parties. Vijay remarked that at times it appeared as though some believed that opposing everything was the only way to prove their role in the Assembly

Grief Over Karur Tragedy

The Chief Minister also spoke about the tragic incident in Karur that claimed 41 lives, describing it as a deeply painful moment for the government. He said the loss had left a lasting impact and noted that despite the tragedy, efforts were made by some to place the entire blame on the ruling administration.

Welfare Work Predates Political Entry

Highlighting his ideological background, Vijay said his political stance did not emerge suddenly but had been reflected in his films and public life for many years. He pointed out that his party had opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) soon after its formationHe further stated that even before formally entering politics, his films often addressed issues such as corruption, social justice, and education. Vijay added that his welfare organisation had been actively involved in public service since the 1990s, supporting people during challenging times

Emphasising continuity in his approach, the Chief Minister said many were aware of the difficulties faced by his films due to the strong political and social messages they carried, underscoring that his current political path is an extension of his long-standing commitment to public welfare.
