In a shocking incident a young inter-caste lovers were found hanging a day after the girl’s house was ransacked and vandalised allegedly by the boy’s family at the quiet rural village of Sathakkudi at Tarangambadi taluk in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday:
As the lovelorn youths belonged two different communities–the girl hailing from the dominant Vanniyar community and the boy, being a dalit–police suspect it as a possible honour killings and are also looking at suicide angle.
According to reports, the young man from Puduppalayam was in a relationship with a minor girl from another community. After their respective families came to know of their relationship, tensions escalated between the two families leading to a violent clash on Monday evening.
During the altercation, the boy’s family allegedly ransacked and vandalised the girl’s house and damaged property, including two-wheelers, leading to unrest in the locality. Amid brewing tension, both the boy and the girl were found hanging today.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Heavy police pickets were deployed in the village to prevent any further escalation of the situation.
As their deaths have raised strong suspicions of honour killing. police have launched a detailed investigation and are questioning multiple individuals in connection with the case.
Sources said the police are also examining whether the deaths were a case of suicide or any external involvement in it.
Forensic teams gathered evidence from the scene, and preliminary findings are awaited to determine the exact sequence of events and the cause of the deaths.
