Chennai, July 8:
Edappadi K Palaniswami, general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government, accusing it of being “corrupt to the core” and alleging serious irregularities in the appointment of government advocates.
In a strongly worded statement, Palaniswami claimed that even individuals accused of petty crimes, such as goat theft, had been appointed as government pleaders. He criticised the government for what he described as arbitrary and politically motivated appointments, and urged it to immediately fill vacancies in a transparent and merit-based manner.
The AIADMK leader alleged that unqualified individuals were being appointed as government advocates and accused the “inexperienced” TVK administration of failing to govern effectively after making unrealistic electoral promises. He also claimed that all politically appointed advocates from the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime had resigned after the elections, leaving several positions vacant.
Palaniswami further alleged that appointments to these posts were being “sold” for several lakh rupees, citing a complaint reportedly filed in court by a woman lawyer associated with the ruling party. He emphasised that the shortage of government advocates was affecting the functioning of subordinate courts across the State.
Raising concerns over delays in judicial proceedings, he questioned why Assistant Public Prosecutors were not temporarily entrusted with court work to ease the burden. He warned that repeated adjournments were impacting ordinary citizens and stressed that courts remained the last hope for justice.
Calling for urgent corrective measures, Palaniswami urged the government to ensure proper and timely appointments to maintain the smooth functioning of the judicial system in Tamil Nadu.
