Chennai, July 10:

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an enhanced version of its Pongal gift scheme for 2027, under which nearly 2.23 crore ration cardholders will receive free dhotis and sarees with improved designs and better fabric quality. The scheme will be implemented through the Public Distribution System (PDS) and will also benefit senior citizens and other eligible welfare recipients across the state.

The redesigned garments will feature modern zari borders in gold, silver, and copper shades, along with an expanded colour palette that includes vibrant green in addition to traditional tones like blue, white, pink, and ivory. The sarees will be made from improved polycot yarn with a higher polyester blend, making them lighter, softer, and more breathable for comfortable daily wear.

The scheme will be carried out at a total cost of ₹642.88 crore, with ₹300 crore already allocated as the first instalment for procurement. The Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles will oversee the production and supply of around 2.27 crore dhotis and sarees to ensure timely distribution before the festival.

Beyond providing festival support, the initiative is expected to generate significant employment, offering nearly six months of continuous work for handloom weavers and benefiting more than five lakh textile workers. The free dhoti and saree distribution is part of the larger Pongal gift package, which also includes rice, sugarcane, jaggery, cashew nuts, and cash assistance, helping families celebrate the festival with dignity and joy.
