Chennai, July 11:
Groundwater levels across Tamil Nadu have recorded a significant decline this year compared to 2025, according to recent data released by the State Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre.
Among the 38 districts monitored, Dindigul has witnessed the steepest fall, with groundwater levels dropping by 6.77 metres. Similar declines have been reported in districts such as Dharmapuri, Karur, Namakkal and Coimbatore, indicating a widespread trend.
Data shows that groundwater is now found at deeper levels in several districts, including 28.74 metres in Ariyalur and over 20 metres in Coimbatore and Cuddalore. This decline poses serious concerns for agriculture, drinking water supply and industrial needs.
Experts attribute the fall to excessive extraction of groundwater, particularly for agriculture, with nearly 21 lakh borewells in use across the State. Rapid urbanisation and encroachment of traditional water bodies have also reduced natural recharge.
Officials and experts stress the urgent need for effective water management and widespread adoption of rainwater harvesting. Without immediate action, the State could face severe water scarcity in the future.
