Dallas, July 14:

The FIFA World Cup has reached its defining stage, and fittingly, the four remaining teams are also the top four ranked nations in world football. The first semi-final promises a blockbuster contest as defending champions France take on European champions Spain in a battle between two of the tournament’s strongest sides.

France are aiming to become only the third nation after Brazil and Germany to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. Spain, meanwhile, are bidding to reach the final for only the second time in their history.

The clash brings together two contrasting footballing philosophies. France have dazzled with their devastating attacking firepower, while Spain have relied on patient possession and tactical discipline to navigate their way into the last four.

Didier Deschamps’ men have looked every bit the favourites, scoring 16 goals to emerge as one of the tournament’s most potent attacking units. Captain Kylian Mbappe has once again led from the front, sharing the lead in the Golden Boot race while also providing three assists. Supported by Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue, France possess arguably the most dangerous forward line left in the competition.

Even when opponents succeed in limiting Mbappe’s influence, France have repeatedly shown they can find goals from elsewhere, making them one of the hardest teams to contain.Spain, however, believe they have the tactical blueprint to stop the defending champions.

Luis de la Fuente’s side have enjoyed the highest average possession in the tournament and are the only team to have completed more than 1,000 passes in the final third. Their ability to dominate the ball has also contributed to one of the competition’s strongest defensive records.

Rodri and Pedri have dictated games from midfield, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal remains a constant threat despite not yet producing his best football. Spain’s attacking displays have not always been convincing, with substitute Mikel Merino playing a decisive role in narrow knockout victories over Portugal and Belgium.

Questions also remain over the form of Nico Williams, who has struggled with injury, and Mikel Oyarzabal, whose four goals all came during the group stage against less-fancied opposition.
