Chennai, July 20:
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has completed major repair works on West Jones Road in Saidapet, with road restoration set to be finished before July 20.
According to Metro Water officials, the works were taken up following a road cave-in reported on July 2. During excavation, a five-metre-deep manhole was found to have collapsed, while a 250-mm diameter gravity sewer main had become dislodged.
The damaged sewer line, which carries wastewater from parts of West Saidapet to the Sarathy Nagar Sewage Pumping Station, was immediately taken up for repairs to prevent disruption in the underground sewer network.
As part of the restoration, the collapsed brick manhole was dismantled and rebuilt as a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structure. The displaced sewer pipeline was also relaid to restore normal flow.
Officials said all major repair works were completed on July 16, and road restoration is now being carried out on priority to ease traffic congestion in the area.
Metro Water reiterated that the repairs were essential to ensure uninterrupted sewage flow and to prevent further infrastructure damage.
