Social media alone cannot be blamed—or relied upon—to prevent risks to children. While platforms have introduced parental controls, content filters, and reporting tools, these measures are often reactive rather than preventive. Children today are exposed to a vast digital ecosystem where harmful content, peer pressure, and addictive design features coexist with educational and creative opportunities. Expecting social media companies alone to safeguard young users ignores the complexity of the problem and the limitations of technology-driven solutions.

The responsibility must be shared across multiple stakeholders. Parents and guardians play a crucial role in guiding digital behaviour, setting boundaries, and maintaining open communication. Schools, too, must integrate digital literacy into their curriculum, teaching children how to navigate online spaces responsibly, identify risks, and protect their mental well-being. Governments and regulators need to enforce stricter accountability on platforms, ensuring transparency in algorithms and stronger safeguards against harmful content. Without a coordinated approach, isolated efforts by social media platforms will fall short.

Ultimately, protecting children in the digital age requires a cultural shift, not just technical fixes. Society must recognise that online safety is an extension of real-world parenting and education. Empowering children with critical thinking skills, emotional resilience, and awareness is far more effective than relying solely on platform restrictions. Social media can be part of the solution, but it cannot be the solution.
