Chennai, July 23:
The Ministry of Railways has declared three major railway infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu as Special Railway Projects (SRPs), a move expected to accelerate land acquisition and streamline execution. The classification recognises these developments as national infrastructure projects undertaken for public purpose, enabling faster implementation.
The projects include the Arakkonam–Renigunta third and fourth railway line spanning 77 km, the Gummidipundi–Gudur third and fourth railway line covering 90 km, and the Hosur–Omalur railway line doubling project extending 147 km. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance railway capacity and improve both passenger and freight movement across key corridors.
According to officials, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Arakkonam–Renigunta expansion has already been completed and submitted to the Railway Board for approval. The project proposes extending additional lines beyond the existing four-line Chennai–Arakkonam section, which is expected to ease congestion and support increasing transport demand.
The Gummidipundi–Gudur project will extend ongoing railway expansion works from Athipattu, improving operational efficiency along one of the busiest routes under Southern Railway. Meanwhile, the Hosur–Omalur doubling project is set to enhance connectivity between Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states by increasing train frequency and carrying capacity.
Officials noted that the SRP status would help expedite project timelines, ultimately boosting rail infrastructure, reducing congestion, and supporting long-term economic and industrial growth in the state.
