DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan on Friday reaffirmed his party’s strong opposition to NEET, insisting that medical admissions should be based solely on Class 12 board examination marks. He argued that the current entrance system disadvantages meritorious students from ordinary schooling backgrounds.
“NEET has killed the students’ education,” Elangovan said, alleging that students who consistently perform well from Class 1 to Class 12 are being denied medical seats, while those who can afford expensive coaching gain an advantage in the entrance exam.
Pointing to structural inequalities, he referred to the case of Anitha from Ariyalur district, whose death had become a symbol of resistance against NEET. He noted that despite scoring high marks in her board exams, she was unable to secure a medical seat under the NEET system.
Elangovan further highlighted the disparity between the number of successful candidates and available seats, stating that nearly nine lakh students cleared NEET this year, while the total number of medical seats stands at around 91,000.
Reiterating the DMK’s long-standing demand, he said the Union government must scrap NEET and restore the system of admissions based on school-level performance to ensure social justice and equal opportunity.
