Ramadoss announces political retirement on 88th birthday

Villupuram, July 25:

S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), marked his 88th birthday with a major announcement, declaring his retirement from active politics.

The veteran leader stated that he would no longer engage in political activities and that party responsibilities would henceforth be handled by his son, Anbumani Ramadoss.

Speaking at a birthday event held at a private medical college in Villupuram, Ramadoss said he had decided to step away from politics starting immediately.

He also revealed that he had recently been hospitalised for nearly 20 days due to health issues, including dizziness. His announcement was met with loud cheers from party cadres present at the event.

The development comes shortly after a significant reconciliation within the PMK’s first family. Ramadoss and his son Anbumani, who had been at odds for over a year, recently reunited in an emotional meeting at the former’s residence in Thailapuram near Tindivanam.

The father-son duo shared a tearful embrace, signalling an end to their prolonged differences that had led to a vertical split within the party.

The rift, which began in 2025, stemmed from internal disagreements over leadership decisions and party structure. It eventually escalated into a public fallout, with both factions operating independently, expelling rival supporters, and holding separate meetings.

The divide also influenced political alliances during elections, with Anbumani aligning with the AIADMK-led NDA, while Ramadoss supported a different front.

Despite multiple failed reconciliation attempts earlier, the recent reunion—coinciding with Ramadoss’ wedding anniversary—has raised hopes of unity within the party. Anbumani’s brief remark, “Ini nallathe nadakkum” (hereafter, only good things will happen), further reinforced optimism among party members.

With Ramadoss stepping aside, the leadership transition marks a new chapter for the PMK, as Anbumani is set to take full charge of the party’s future direction.
