Chennai, July 29:
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, requesting a reconsideration of restrictions on the inter-state transportation of construction materials, particularly stone aggregates, warning that the move could delay key National Highway projects in the state.
In his letter, Satheesan emphasised the longstanding ties between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, describing their relationship as one built on geographical proximity, cultural affinity, and a strong tradition of cooperation. He noted that both states have consistently worked together under the spirit of cooperative federalism to promote economic development and public welfare.
Referring to Tamil Nadu’s Gazette notification dated July 9, the Kerala Chief Minister said the new regulations governing the movement of rough stones and related materials have significantly disrupted the supply chain. He pointed out that districts such as Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanniyakumari have traditionally been the primary sources of stone aggregates for Kerala’s infrastructure projects.
Satheesan highlighted that Kerala has limited availability of suitable stone aggregates for large-scale works and depends heavily on supplies from neighbouring Tamil Nadu. He cautioned that continued restrictions could impact the timely execution of strategically important highway projects.
