The Principal District and Sessions Court in Thoothukudi has dismissed the bail plea of Opposition DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan in the case relating to making derogatory and defamatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.
The Legislator knocked the doors of the Sessions Court after the Judicial Magistrate Court dismissed his bail plea.
After Principal District Judge S. Subadevi sought certain clarifications regarding the petition pending filed by him before the Madras High Court during the earlier hearing, it was taken up again on Thursday evening, when the judge after hearing arguments from both the sides, dismissed the bail plea.
Meanwhile, Markandeyan’s counsel made a mention before the Madras High Court today and wanted the bail plea, on which orders were reserved, to be taken up today itself.
Justice G K Ilanthirayan, however, said it would be taken up on Monday.
It may be noted that the High Court on had Tuesday (July 28) reserved its orders on Markandeyan’s petition challenging his arrest and seeking to quash the remand order, and enlarge him on bail.
Markandeyan, elected from Vilathikulam constituency in the recent Assembly elections, was arrested on July 20 by the Thoothukudi district Crime Branch police for allegedly making threatening remarks against Chief Minister Vijay during a DMK meeting held in Kovilpatti to thank the voters. He was questioned for more than 12 hours at the district police office before being remanded in judicial custody till
August 3 by Thoothukudi Judicial Magistrate-I Ms.Sumathi.
Challenging his arrest and judicial remand, the MLA knocked the doors of the High Court after the Judicial Magistrate Court in Thoothukudi dismissed is bail plea and also the one filed by the police seeking custodial interrogation.
Mr Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan after hearing elaborate arguments from both sides, observed that the arguments were based on assumptions regarding events that had not occurred and remarked that such submissions add to the burden of the court and reserved orders on the petition without specifying any date.
