Glasgow, Aug 3:

India formally stepped into its role as the next host of the Commonwealth Games after receiving the Games flag at a grand closing ceremony in Glasgow. The symbolic handover marks Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 edition, which will also commemorate the centenary of the Games.

The flag was received by Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, P. T. Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, signifying the official transition of hosting responsibilities from Scotland to India. The moment marked not just a ceremonial exchange, but the beginning of an ambitious journey towards staging one of the biggest multi-sport events in the country.

The closing ceremony itself was a visual spectacle, celebrating Scotland’s rich cultural identity through music, dance and storytelling. As the evening progressed, the tone shifted seamlessly to India, with a vibrant showcase reflecting the nation’s diversity and heritage. Performances themed around “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—the world is one family—captured India’s message of unity and global harmony.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the traditional flag procession. The Commonwealth Games flag was carried across the stadium, lowered with ceremony, and formally presented before being handed over to the Indian delegation. The carefully choreographed moment drew applause from spectators and athletes alike, underscoring the continuity and spirit of the Games.

With the handover complete, attention now turns to preparations in Ahmedabad. Hosting the 2030 Games will be a landmark opportunity for India to showcase its sporting infrastructure, organisational capability and cultural richness on the global stage. The centenary edition is expected to carry added significance, placing India at the centre of a historic milestone in the Commonwealth sporting movement.
