Karur, Aug 5:
Three senior citizen siblings drowned in the Cauvery river near Nerur in Karur district on Tuesday while attempting to immerse their mother’s ashes.
According to sources, Srinivasan (64), a retired bank employee from Narasimhapuram, along with his brothers Arunan (62) and Suresh (61), had lost their mother three days ago. The siblings had gone to the Cauvery river to perform the final rites.
While entering the river, Srinivasan is said to have accidentally stepped into a deeper section and began to struggle. In an attempt to rescue him, his brothers Arunan and Suresh jumped into the water. However, all three were swept away and drowned.
Relatives who accompanied them raised an alarm, following which members of the public rushed to the spot and pulled the trio out of the river. They were immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Vangal police later retrieved the bodies and sent them to the Karur Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
